Guelph area housing market picks up Row houses and apartments have proven popular with local residents this year, as the housing market in general has picked up.
There were 651 housing starts in the first 10 months of this year in the Guelph census metropolitan area, which includes Guelph-Eramosa and Puslinch townships, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reports.

That’s up from 563 in the same period last year.

“Consumers looking for more affordable types of housing boosted demand for townhouse and apartments this year,” senior market analyst Erica McLerie stated in a release.

She was referring to 194 apartment unit starts in the period this year, compared with 166 in the corresponding 10 months of 2011.

Starts for row houses, also called townhouses, stood at 193, up from 137 for the same time last year. First-time buyers and others of limited means prefer the lower priced options, the housing agency reported.

Starts for semi-detached houses at 44 and single-detached dwellings at 220 were virtually identical to the year before, 42 and 218 respectively.
