Finally Stricter Rules For Balcony Glass for New Ontario Condo Developers

condo glass balcony Most of us have heard about the glass falling from balconies at the Toronto Bedford Road new condos last year.   (CBC's article - Glass falls for 3rd time from Toronto condo) and time has finally arrived for some preventative measures.

The Municipal Affairs Minister announced changes to the Ontario building code aimed at preventing glass from falling incidents from high-rise buildings.

The changes take effect on July 1st, 2012 and will require construction companies to use:

1.  Heat-strenghtened laminated glass when glass is close to the edge of a balcony. (it will be the same type of glass used in automobile windshields and is less prone to shatter).

2.  Heat-stenghtened laminated glass or heat-soaked tempered glass where glass balcony guards are inset from the edge of the balcony.

While the new rules are welcome, unfortunately they will not apply to existing condominiums or to developers who have already been issued permits.

The cities will have to be contacted for repairs in existing buildings.

The Minister admitted these are only temporary measures to address public safety while the Canadian Standarsd Association develops national guidelines.
