Top 5 ways to tell if a neighbourhood is right for you

1. Check out the crime statistics:

Safety is paramount when deciding to make a move. You certainly don’t want to move to an area where you or your family will be feeling uncomfortable. The best course of action to ensure you and your loved ones have a safe, happy move is to check with the experts. Stop by the local police department and chat with them about any neighbourhood concerns.  In addition, Toronto police keep a detailed log of crime statistics by region that is available online.

2. Speak to your neighbours:

Who knows the ‘hood better than the people who actually live there? Make a point to speak to some of your potential neighbours and ask pointed questions about the area. If you have any specific concerns, this is the time to address them.

3. Stop by the local schools:

Of course, this one only applies if you have children or are thinking about them in the future. But good schools are an indication of a strong community. For many parents, or folks thinking about possibly becoming parents, schools are tops on their list of neighbourhood necessities. Make a point to stop by the school your child would be attending, and the schools close by and speak to the principal. Get the school’s ranking and standardized test results to help you decide if this is indeed the place for you.

4. Check out the neighbourhood life:

As a potential resident, only you know what your priorities are. But, there are certain timeless signs of a well-cared for neighbourhood that you may want to consider. Is there good green space, and do people in the area utilize what outdoor space there is? These are signs of an active community. Are the lawns well-cared for? Certainly not everybody has a green thumb. But if a homeowner takes pride in his or her house’s appearance, this means they are more likely to show respect for yours as well.

5. Investigate the local amenities:

Good local businesses are a telltale sign of a thriving community. Consider this: If a neighbourhood was on the decline, would business be flocking to join? Would new infrastructure be put into place? How many grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, etc. are there? While these things may not seem important, these are services you will be utilizing constantly and having a bustling commercial development means the community is flourishing.
